The 8 stages of AI visibility

Your buyers ask ChatGPT before they ask Google. They type "what's the best accountant in Leeds?" or "which CRM should a 10-person team use?". The AI answers. You are in that answer, or you are not.

Being "in the answer" is not one thing. It is a ladder with 8 stages. Most brands are stuck at stage 4. They're in the list. AI never picks them.

Short answer: The 8 stages of AI visibility are Not there, Visible, Mentioned, In the list, Cited, Cited with link, Recommended, and Recommended with link. Stages 1 to 4 get you noticed. Stages 5 to 8 get you clicks and sales.

The 8 stages of AI visibility, from Not there to Recommended with link

Real answers don't always climb in order. A page can be used as a source without your brand being named. The ladder shows what each step is worth to you, from least to most.

How to test your brand

Open ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. Ask 5 questions your buyers ask. Use "best [service] in [city]" or "which [product] should I choose for [need]?". Write down what you see in each answer. Then match it to the stages below.

Stage 1. Not there

AI doesn't name you. Your competitors get the answer. For that buyer, you don't exist. A common cause: your website blocks AI tools from reading it. In our Sri Lankan banking study, every site we audited failed our check for letting AI crawlers in.

Stage 2. Visible

Something of yours appears. It might be a product, a page or a passing reference. It's a start. A buyer won't remember it.

Stage 3. Mentioned

AI says your brand name. Now a buyer can search for you. But a mention alone does not mean AI trusts you. Check that what it says is true. AI often states wrong prices, phone numbers or services. We call that a hallucination: AI stating something false with full confidence.

Stage 4. In the list

AI puts you in its list of options. Position matters. Number 1 gets the click. Number 6 rarely does. This is where most brands stop.

Stage 5. Cited

AI uses your website as a source. It read your page to build the answer. But there is no link to you in the answer. You did the work. Someone else may get the visit.

Many guides, including our own on getting cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity, use "citation" for any source link. Here we split it in two. SiteSignal can tell whether AI only read your page, or put the link in front of the buyer.

AI links to your website. Buyers can click straight through. This sends real traffic.

AI picks you. It says "choose X" and X is you. This is the moment the buyer decides.

AI picks you and links to you. The buyer is one click from your page. This is where sales happen.

The 8 stages of AI visibility, with a test for each one.

What moves you up

  • Stages 1 to 3: let AI tools read your site. Say clearly who you are, what you do and where. Fix wrong facts.
  • Stage 4: get named on the pages AI reads for your category: reviews, comparisons, directories and trusted lists.
  • Stages 5 and 6: publish pages that answer the exact buyer question, with facts AI can quote.
  • Stages 7 and 8: give AI a reason to pick you. Clear proof, a clear fit for a need, and the same facts everywhere.

Fix them in order. Being recommended means little if AI gives buyers the wrong phone number.

Check it every week

Each AI tool gives a different answer. The answers change from week to week. One test tells you today's stage. Weekly checks tell you if you're moving.

Find your stage without testing by hand

SiteSignal asks your buyers' questions on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews every day. For each answer it records whether you're visible, mentioned, listed, cited, linked or recommended. Then it gives you a weekly action plan to move up. Start your 7-day free trial. No card needed.

Frequently asked questions

What is AI visibility?

How often and how well AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity name, cite and recommend your brand when buyers ask questions.

What is the difference between cited and cited with link?

Cited means AI used your website as a source to build the answer. Cited with link means the answer includes a link to your site that buyers can click.

Why are most brands stuck at stage 4?

Being listed is easier than being picked. AI recommends brands it can verify, with clear facts and proof from many sources.

How often should I check my AI visibility?

Every week. Each AI tool answers differently, and the answers change often.
